ISH27-1 is more similar to those of ISH51-1, ISH51-2, and ISH51-3 (88 % DNA identity), than to ISH27-2 and ISH27-3 (80 % identity). ISH27 have been isolated through their inactivation of the bacteriorhodopsin (BR, bop) gene (Pfeifer et al., 1985). ISH27 transposition "bursts" occur after storage at 4¡C (> 2 years), but no transposition is observed upon continuous cultivation at 37¡C (3 months) (Pfeifer and Blaseio, 1990).
